What to Expect in Our First Therapy Session: A Casual Chat with No Pressure

Let’s be honest, that first therapy session can feel a bit like going on a blind date—but without the awkward small talk and worries about who’s going to pick up the tab. It’s totally normal to be nervous! You’re about to meet someone new, share a bit of your life story, and you have no idea what to expect. So, let me give you a little sneak peek into what it’s like to hang out with me during that first session.

When you walk in, the first thing I’ll do is invite you to grab a drink—coffee, tea, water, whatever makes you feel cozy. This isn’t a formal meeting; it’s more like you’re visiting a friend’s place where you can relax and be yourself. There’s no pressure to spill your guts or share your deepest secrets (unless you really want to!). If you feel like talking, great! If not, we’ll ease into it. I’m here to guide the conversation, ask some questions, and help you get comfortable. No interrogations, I promise!

Think of this as our “getting-to-know-you” session. We’re not jumping straight into the deep end here; it’s more like dipping our toes in the water first. I’m not expecting you to tell me everything right away, just like you wouldn’t pour out your whole life story on a first coffee date. Relationships take time, and this one is no different. We’re building trust, and that’s something we’ll work on together over time. (If you wouldn’t text your date “I love you” after one coffee, you definitely don’t need to bare your soul right away here either!).

As much as I want to learn about you, I also want you to get to know me. Therapy is a two-way street—we’re creating a partnership where you feel safe and supported. I might share a bit about myself, just to let you know I’m a real human, not a therapy robot. We might even share a laugh or two because, hey, even in serious conversations, it’s okay to find some lightness.

So, take a deep breath. There’s no script, no right or wrong way to do this. It’s okay if you don’t know where to start—that’s my job! I’m here to help guide the process, make sure you feel heard, and make this whole therapy thing feel a little less daunting.

I can’t wait to meet you, hear your story, and see where this journey takes us. And remember, therapy is a process, not a race. We’ll get there together, one step at a time. Until then, just come as you are, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s chat!
